R2 Construction Group outside from the field and their offices, invest in the lives of young talented individuals pursuing construction and architecture. Owner Richard Reyes feels much passion in mentoring and helping others with the knowledge and experience he has gained over the past 30 years in the construction industry. During November of 2013, J Mikael Kaul, Practicing Architect and Professor at Florida Atlantic University School of Architecture invited R2 Construction Group to bring a lecture to his Professional Practice class. Richard Reyes alongside Oscar Chica, an R2 Design Group Designer and an FAU School of Architecture Alumni were able to bring students their first hand experiences in an honest and rather entertaining style.
Richard Reyes, founder and CEO of R2 Group, a Design/Build firm in Miami, came to inform the class about the business of design and construction. Reyes began his career by pouring concrete at a construction site at a very young age and worked his way up in the construction industry. Over the years, he worked with many large construction companies, and was in charge of an extensive list of residential and commercial projects in Broward and Miami Dade County. Reyes said, “I began in the construction industry very young and I gained experience in every aspect of the construction business, especially in Miami”. During the lecture he demonstrated to be a straightforward, humble businessman with the desire to plant a seed of knowledge into the students who would soon be graduating and entering the architecture and construction job market. Reyes made emphasis on always doing the best at whatever you do, whether it’d be construction, architecture or any other profession. He spoke about understanding what it takes to be in the construction and architecture business. Some of his major points were knowing how speak in public and the art of negotiating. R2 takes much pride in the high-end work they provide their clients and has always delivered the best quality craftsmanship in all of their construction and design projects. R2 Group along with its design and construction divisions, has been featured in popular TV shows like, Hot Listing Miami, Million Dollar Listing Miami, and has also been featured in Modern Home Builder magazine. The message was clear; it takes hard work, dedication and passion to be successful at what one endeavors.
Oscar Chica, designer and visualization artist at R2 Design Group and Florida Atlantic University, School of Architecture Alumni spoke to the students about transitioning to the real world from school and his experiences during his college career. The students eagerly engaged with Oscar, as they wanted to gain any advice that would help them in their transition. He explained to the students how vital it was to be able to work well with clients and make them happy. Students asked, “What was the most useful lesson you learned from architecture school?” Oscar humorously answered, “To stay up late working on projects.” The class chuckled, but they got the idea. That statement reflected the dedication that is put into their projects to ultimately deliver the clients a world-class design and total work of art.
